Pines, Jehiel Michal
(1843-1913)
   Russian author, Zionist and yishuv leader. He was born in Ruzhany, Belorussia. He contributed to the Hebrew press, arguing against assimilation, and made plans to establish an agricultural school. He represented the Mazkeret Mosheh society in Palestine from 1878, and played an important role in the early stages of Jewish settlement. One of the founders of the Hebrew-speaking movement in Jerusalem, he opposed Halukkah and fanaticism; his attitudes gave rise to conflict with rabbis in Jerusalem.
